You Do Get to Choose Again!
I’m sure you heard that expression before that it’s not over until it’s over. And it’s true. As long as we’re living, we’re still in the game. It doesn’t matter what’s happened before. It doesn’t matter who you hurt or who you hurt. Well, of course, it matters. But what has happened in the past is in the past. It matters only to the degree if affects you. You have a say over that. You’re still in the game.
Of course, I’m writing this for myself as well as you. For some reason, I’ve made up that life is over for me. What I mean by that is that a part of me believes I’m never going to become the well known author I want to be. I’m never going to earn the kind of money I really want. And I’m never going to feel really successful, like I made it. But that is bull! The problem is that we believe it. That’s the real problem. And as long as I do, and as long as you believe the bull you believe, that’s going to be our reality, because we’re not going to make an effort to change things. What person would who believed the kind of crap I just told you a part of me believes?
So we need to change our mindset. But it’s not that easy. If you’re like most of us, you believe what you tell yourself. I certainly do. And we can’t just tell ourselves that it’s not the truth even though it’s not the truth So we stay stuck. And we pretend we’re not stuck. After all, we’re surviving aren’t we? We probably even get to go out to eat once in awhile and even take a vacation. But is that all you want out of life? Is that really it?
So what do we do? How do we get out of the doldrums, the “this is not that bad” thing we tell ourselves.
I have this idea that if we can take responsibility for our beliefs, what I like to call our internal conversations, we can do something about them. But we have to take full responsibility for them without making ourselves or anyone else wrong for the fact that we’ve been listening to them for as long as we have and that they were passed onto us. And this is going to take work. It’s not that easy to do or we would have done it. But the very first thing is that we have to believe it’s possible, that we can take responsibility for our internal conversations in a way that will silence them, or, at the very least, quiet them down. Because it’s only then that we can make new choices out of different internal conversations. Otherwise, we’re stuck making the same old choices based on the same old internal conversations that have us be stuck exactly where we are.
It’s really not over until it’s over, until we breathe our last breath Until that time, there’s a lot we can do and change. Really! More than you can imagine, but you have to believe that it’s possible. You have to be willing to “own” that you have something to do with you being stuck where you are. And you have to be willing to be responsible for that.
